UPLOADED 31 JULY, 2021
The "PLUG IN GRAND PRIX" is where visitors to "PLUG IN" choose the brand or company they found most appealing among the exhibitors. At the March 2021 show, the brand that won the most visitor support and took the Grand Prize was "BRING™," JEPLAN, Inc.'s original brand. We spoke with Ryu Takahashi of JEPLAN, which makes clothes from clothes as it works toward a circular economy.
Congratulations on winning the "PLUG IN Grand Prix" Grand Prize.
(Mr. Takahashi) Thank you very much. It had been a few years since we last exhibited at PLUG IN, and we exhibited this time because we wanted more people to know about our original brand "BRING™," so this is honestly a great pleasure. Receiving so much recognition from fashion-business professionals is a huge encouragement for BRING™, which has only just begun its full-scale rollout as a brand. As interest in the environment and sustainability grows, I think people found our "making clothes from clothes" model interesting.
Please tell us about BRING™.
(Mr. Takahashi) BRING™ is a D2C brand that collects clothes people no longer need and offers new clothing remanufactured from those collected garments as raw material. By collecting unwanted clothes from consumers, we reduce the amount of textile waste, and use our proprietary chemical recycling technology, "BRING™ Technology," to turn polyester fiber into raw material for new clothes. We're not just about sustainability — we also propose designs and functionality that suit the mood and needs of the present moment.
How was exhibiting at PLUG IN?
(Mr. Takahashi) This spring, around the same time as PLUG IN, we had booths at several joint trade shows related to fashion, outdoor gear, and sustainability, but among them, PLUG IN drew a great many visits from professional buyers at specialty stores and department stores with a real strength in fashion. Many visitors already knew BRING™, and it was great that they could pick up and touch our newest products. We also heard from many buyers who said they were "looking for environmentally conscious products," and the response and reception exceeded our expectations. We received many pop-up invitations too, which have led to new initiatives.
Please tell us about the future of BRING™.
(Mr. Takahashi) Alongside our work regenerating clothing, as a brand we want to keep communicating the quality and appeal of our products to consumers. We're aiming for wear that dries quickly even after sweating, breathes well, and feels comfortable — clothes people find themselves reaching for again and again, that make everyday life more comfortable. This summer, together with the project "FOR EARTH FOR US," led by Gas As Interface (Tokyo), we released collaboration items with three globally active artists. We also plan to open a physical store around the fall. Going forward, BRING™ will keep pursuing its own identity through collaborations and more, offering more people the chance to encounter our clothes. We want to treasure every encounter with companies and people willing to take on new manufacturing challenges together with BRING™, and keep growing that circle even further.
Thank you very much!
